Finding the right Yoga Mat can be a confusing task. The sheer number of materials and thicknesses and patterns can send you into a whirlwind. By asking yourself a few simple questions, you can quickly hone in on the right style and mat for you.
Are you still figuring out if this Yoga thing is for you?
If you are just starting out and not sure if your Yoga phase will make it past the first week, it is definitely ok to checkout the discount Yoga mats. You can generally find a decent Yoga mat for $12 or so. Things to look out for with cheap Yoga mats are the thickness and the material. Some of the really cheap mats ($5-$10) are made of material that has a factory or chemical smell to them. This can be pretty uncomfortable as you will be in constant contact with your mat during your Yoga exercises.
What kind of Yoga are you into?
Most Yoga mats are pretty much general purpose, but some forms of Yoga may require special features in a mat. Take Bikram Yoga for example, due to the high temperatures, and therefore more sweat, you may need a stickier or more coarse mat so you don’t slip. High heat Yoga will also require mats that handle water / moisture better. Some of the more strenuous varieties of Yoga may have you wishing for a cushier mat. A nice thick yoga mat can make a huge difference in your comfort level.
Size?
Do you like to roll around and take up space? Some of us just need more room during Yoga. If this is the case make sure to take in the overall size of the mat you are purchasing. It is very disruptive to have to readjust yourself or your mat in the middle of a pose. Worse yet is extending past your mat onto the hard floor.
Color / Design
Your going to be very familiar with your mat, make sure to get something that isn’t going to argue with you. If it is too bright it may start to take a toll on your eyes. If your Yoga mat is too dark or dismal it could very well alter your mood as well. Try and find something appealing to you and brings you warm or soothing feelings.
Personal Preference
What matters most to you? Your personal comfort level and happiness with the Yoga mat are the most important things. Regardless of what I or anyone has to say, you need to like your Yoga mat. If you prefer the squishy rubberized feeling, more power to you. If, however you prefer the feel of natural cotton under your toes, then go with a cotton Yoga mat.
Eco Friendly Mats
The Eco variety are made with natural materials that will decompose over time when discarded. This is a great option for those of you that don’t want to upset mother nature with the non-biodegradable rubbers and PVC in some of the sticky mats.
When it comes down to it, you just need something that you like and is comfortable for you while you are practicing Yoga.
