Simple yoga mat ?

I’m about to start practicing yoga.. What is needed for a simple/cheap yoga mat ?

Any other tips or advice ?
some type of alternative ..

I’ve practiced yoga for a very long time, and I’ve never used a mat. But then, I’ve always lived where there were rugs on the floor. If you have a rug, just lay a clean sheet down; no need for a mat.

If you are really serious about practicing yoga, a mat is your least concern.

Due to a serious back injury in 2006, I can no longer practice the asanas; but I still continue for the most part with the rest of the yoga regimen.

You need an authority in the beginning to reference for guidance. If you are not going to attend a formal course for instruction, then get a good book on yoga. I can recommend two, written by a former Guru of mine:

(1) Fundamentals of Yoga.

(2) Yoga Sutras: the Textbook of Yoga Psychology.

Their author is Dr. Rammuti S. Mishra, M.D.: an amazing human being. You can read his biography on the Internet.

I would counsel you to in the beginning, focus primarily on the practice of pranayama: the breathing exercises: they are by far the most important.

Two other suggestions, should you become truly committed: the study of Sanskrit, and another very esoteric volume: “Hatha Yoga Pradipika” by Swami Svatmarama. This ancient work delves deeply into the serpent power of Kundhalini, which you will learn about in your pursuit and practice.

Best of luck, and take care,

Alberich

Picking Yoga Mat?

I want to buy a yoga mat BUT there are so many different types, prices and sizes, that I am wondering if I should know any basic information when I am buying a yoga mat. Could you please give me some advice. Thank you!

A standard yoga mat(sticky mat) is 1/8 inch thick. That is what most people use for their practice. I prefer one that is a little thicker 1/4 inch because I like the added cushioning and it feels better on my back. Some people think mine is “too squishy” though. Target usually has a decent selection of yoga mats. It’s really about personal preference but my favorite mats are “tapas ultra” by “hugger mugger.” Hope this helps and have fun. Links to yoga mats:

13 Dec 09 yoga mat children

yoga mat children
Is a yoga mat, used only for napping of 1 & 2 yr olds, a poor choice in terms of support, etc?

I work at a preschool/daycare and we provide child-size yoga mats & small pillows for our toddlers to nap on. The mom of one of our 2 year olds feels that the mats are not good for the children to nap on and she wants to provide her own mat, one that would offer more support. The kids sleep well on the yoga mats and we were of the understanding that the firmness was good for the body, and the mat offers enough cushion that the little ones seem very comfortable. Any input? Thank you!

I wouldn’t want to sleep on a yoga mat, that seems to me just like sleeping on the floor. But kids fall asleep on the floor and don’t think twice about it. If the mom wants to provide her own mat, let her, but I don’t see anything wrong with the mat.
