What is the best yoga mat out there?
I have been through two mats so far….the first was a thicker mat from Gaiam that was thick but it was also slippery. The second was from Gaiam and it was a natural jute material. Unfortunately this one started to disintegrate after a while and was entirely too thin.
I was thinking about another one from Gaiam….just kidding….I’m ready to switch brands. What do you suggest?
There seem to be a few opinions about this. Here are some websites that have good ones and their reviews:

What’s the difference between an ashtanga yoga mat and a normal yoga mat?
An Ashtanga yoga mat is also known as a rug. Unlike the typical yoga sticky mat, the Ashtanga mat is made of cotton. They were used for hundreds of years in India before the sticky mats were invented. The cotton absorbs sweat and a lot of people who practice Ashtanga use it on top of a sticky mat, but it can be used alone. When I do Ashtanga, I usually just use my sticky mat though. Is my yoga mat supposed to be slippery when I sweat?
I bought a yoga mat today and I’m fairly new to doing it. I went to a class tonight and it was really hot and I was sweating (but not insanely sweating) and my mat was so slippery that I couldn’t even do downward dog after about 20minutes ’cause I kept slipping. Am I supposed to lock my legs in position to hold myself up? No one else seemed to be slipping.
The mat that I bought also isn’t just a yoga mat. It’s a mat for aerobics and yoga, etc.
If you bought the mat today, did you scrub it? New mats have a coating on them that is slippery. You can either scrub it off with a moist scrubbing sponge and then let your mat dry. Or you can wear it off, but that means slippery in the meantime, as you’ve noticed.
If it is labeled a yoga mat, then it should be the right kind, the sticky mat. Do check, because if it doesn’t stick to the floor (and most exercise mats don’t) you’re going to be in danger of slipping when you place one foot on and one foot off and your mat moves.
If you tend to sweat a lot (and/or you’re doing hot yoga) there are mats that are especially designed for that. Try http://www.huggermugger.com/, they label mats for being suitable for hot yoga. You can also get special towels for on top of your mat for hot yoga, but those tend to be slippery when you are NOT sweating.
I would scrub the mat first, then see if is still slippery, before you shell out the money for a ’sweaty’ mat.
